Breed Standard
A breed standard is an important document, which is usually arrived after a breed has been established and may from time to time be updated to be more current with the direction of a breed.
USMMA Standard
http://www.namarchador.org/breed/usmma-breed-standard/
At this time, the USMMA does not require inspection for Marchadors to be entered into the stud book. Any USMMA Marchador can be bred, regardless of quality.
ABCCMM Standard
The inspection process is a part of the ABCCMM process only. The breed has a standard which includes gait, conformation and temperament. The Inspector inspects the horse on the ground, then watches the horse being ridden, and finally, the inspector rides the horse. The horse is awarded points in various categories and must have a minimum score in each in order to pass in each element of the inspection. Temperament is under constant scrutany.... If at any time during the inspection on the ground or while being ridden the Marchador is anything other than kind and showing yield, the Inspector will not pass the horse.
In order to be permanently registered in Brazil, the Marchador must be inspected by a trained ABCCMM Inspector for quality of conformation, gait AND temperament.
When a mating occurs, the breeder must send an application to the ABCCMM, then when the Marchador is born, it is viewed by an inspector, DNA is taken and the Foal is granted "provisional registration". After 3 years of age, the horse is eligible for Inspection. Once the Marchador passes inspection, the owner can register the Marchador with "permanent registration" and the horse can be bred, with foals registrable.
The quality of the ABCCMM Mangalarga Marchador has been kept high, and the breed has advanced as a result of these inspections.
